Family Christmas Traditions

Family Christmas Traditions

Christmas with little ones can be such a magical (and exhausting) time of year. For those experiencing the holiday for the first time, or at an age they can embrace the magic of the season, it's such a fun opportunity to create traditions and memories for years to come.

We've listed some of our team's favourite Christmas traditions, along with a few other ideas that you might like to incorporate into your own family's traditions.

The Treasure Hunt

"While I was asleep the "elves" would take a string and thread it around the house; under chairs, tables, doorway and objects. Starting at my bed, when I'd wake up in the morning I'd follow the string around the house until I found my present at the end." Lina, Marketing

Christmas Eve Box

"Christmas Eve is a special day we spend together as just our family of three. We give our toddler a Christmas Eve box that has matching pjs for the family as well as activities to do together throughout the day, including a cookie kit that we bake to leave out for Santa. We watch a Christmas movie together before our son goes to bed, then spend the rest of the night assembling toys and wrapping presents so they are laid out for him when he wakes on Christmas morning." Lucy, Wholesale & Production

Lucky Coin

"My family are Greek and Macedonian so Christmas Day is always filled with a lot of food. We have a pastry we call "pita" that has a foil-wrapped $2 coin hidden in. Everyone selects their piece and the person who has the coin is said to have luck for the next year." Katherine, Marketing

Gingerbread Decorating

"We love Christmas baking, and usually make and decorate gingerbread for the kids to take to school. We always watch a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve, wear matching Christmas PJs, leave out cookies and carrots for Santa and the reindeer, and on Christmas morning we open presents and try to get to the beach for a swim!" Erin, Customer Service

Keepsake Christmas Ornaments

A "baby's first Christmas" ornament is always an exciting purchase, however consider letting your little one pick out their own ornament every year after so they can have an annual reminder of their childhood. This can be an ornament they choose, make, have dated, or you select, to mark the year. You can even gift their set to them when they have their very own Christmas tree to decorate.

Christmas Books

A fun and educational way to get into the spirit of the season. You can gift throughout the month, provide a stack on a specific day, or even wrap up books individually and use as a chocolate-free "advent calendar."

Lights Tour

Drive around your neighbourhood (or take a drive to some well-known locations) to see all the twinkling lights and festive decorations.

Donating Toys

As little ones grow, so do their toy collections. December is a great time to de-stash and donate any toys that may have been outgrown to children in need, while making room for new gifts.

Advent Calendar

An advent calendar is a great way to countdown the days to Christmas; from classic chocolate treats to small toys or books, to homemade activities.

Elf on the Shelf

A very popular option for families with older children, for the younger ones you could simply make this a "hide and fine" exercise for the week, or month, leading up to Christmas. Your Elf might even gift some Christmas books or festive pyjamas to kick-start the season.

Are there any other special Christmas or holiday traditions you love celebrating?
